Industry professionals, academic associates, and university students joined together to discuss all topics in residual management at the 9th Canadian Biosolids & Residuals Conference. To encourage a new cohort of biosolids and residuals professionals, SYLVIS sponsored a student poster contest with enthusiastic participation. The student posters were evaluated on a set of criteria which encompassed design, content, relevance, and overall impression.

First place was awarded to Okenna Obi-Nyoku from McGill University for presenting his Ph.D research on calibrating the decomposition and denitrification model to estimate crop yield and greenhouse gas emissions from land-applied biosolids. Second place was awarded to Christopher Hey from Carleton University for his research on capillary barrier construction using municipal biosolids for management of reactive mine wastes. Finally, Rooney Kim Lazcano from Purdue University, received third place for presenting her research on the emerging contaminants of concern, per- and polyfluoroakyal acid, in biosolids and non-biosolids based fertilizers.

SYLVIS was proud to be involved with such a talented group of budding residuals experts. Congratulations to all participants and winners for stimulating thought and facilitating quality discussions on research initiatives in the industry.
